The BC Browncoats have been part of the world-wide Browncoat movement since April 2004.

We are fans of Joss Whedon's critically acclaimed television series Firefly, and the follow up motion picture Serenity.

We are a very socially active group, and we love to see new faces join us online and at our events. Our group is also very community minded, and we work hard to do good works for those less fortunate.

So, what is a Browncoat anyway?

Within Joss Whedon's Firefly 'verse, "Browncoats" was the nickname given to the men and women of the Independent Faction who fought a bloody war against the Alliance. Five hundred years in the future, the earth has been used up and the planets of the universe have been terraformed to support human life... some better than others. Those 'better' central planets formed the Alliance, and sought to spread the 'light of civilization' to those more rural planets. Not everyone agreed with this. The Independents banded together to fight this civilizing influence and centralization of government… and lost. Among those former Independents trying to find their way in the new world are Captain Mal Reynolds and his first mate Zoe... just part of the crew of 'Serenity', a ship named after one of the more bloody battle zones.

In the real world, Browncoats are us... fans of the universe created by Joss Whedon. Like those Browncoats in the Firefly 'verse, we have refused to lie down and accept the premature termination of the 'verse we love. After the television series Firefly was canceled by the Fox Network in 2002, Browncoats organized a worldwide campaign to keep the universe alive and were uniquely effective. We did the impossible! Thanks to the efforts of millions of fans just like you, the feature film Serenity was made and the universe continues on.

Just what is it that makes Browncoats so special?

Browncoats are a unique band of fans. Successful in the fight to keep Joss Whedon's 'verse alive, we have come through some very dark times... and emerged on the other side as strong individuals, life-long friends, committed activists and bonded communities. And while Firefly is the reason we come together, it is the family we have found that keeps us together.
